Wal Mart Impact On The World s Economy Essay - 1959 Words

With more than 6,000 stores around the world, and more than two million people employed worldwide it is safe to say that Wal-Mart has got it s foothold in the world s economy. With eleven percent of all imports from China to the United States from the years of 2001 through 2006 , Wal-Mart obviously takes up a good chunk of total imports and employs one percent of all of America s workforce. Now taking all that into account in the early 2000 s a series of accusations arose about the nation s largest private employer, those accusations being that Wal-Mart uses sweat shop labor and is discriminatory against women and minorities. Now almost 15 years after these initial reports, Wal-Mart s success has only grown. According to Charles Fishman, the author of The Wal-Mart Effect, Wal-Mart isn t just a store, or a huge company, or a phenomenon anymore. Wal-Mart shapes where we shop, the products we buy, and the prices we pay-even for people who never shop there. . . .(Fishman 2006.) Now wit h the aforementioned subjects, this only adds relevance to the question posed above. While on one hand Wal-Mart brings multiple jobs to communities that otherwise would see an uneven distribution of wealth, there are so many reasons why Wal-Mart is bad, bad for the economy in the long run, bad for the environment, and most of all bad for the furtherance of Modern Human Morality. Death with Dignity Act should be Legalized in Every State

Once people are diagnosed to be terminally-ill, they only have a certain amount of time to live, and they know that as their disease progresses that they will only get worse and worse and they will eventually lose themselves. These people should have a choice as of whether they want to live out those dreadful days that lie ahead of them, or to simply end their lives peacefully, without any pain. Physician- Assisted Suicide or Euthanasia allows people to make the decision. Although the end-result of both procedures is the same, the technique differs slightly. In Physician- Assisted Suicide, the physician injects the lethal substances, and with Euthanasia, the doctor only provides a lethal amount of a drug to the patient and they ingest it themselves. Physician-Assisted Suicide and Euthanasia should be legalized as a federal law so that the patients have the right to decide whether they would like to end their lives when in a terminally-ill state. Evil And Dark Desires Of The Subconscious - 1273 Words

In the play Othello by William Shakespeare, the audience encounters characters that are manifestations of evil and dark desires of the subconscious. This theme is portrayed through the characters of Iago and Othello. From the start, Iago’s malicious intents are clear. Because of his feelings of incompetence, particularly to Othello, he succumbs to very human emotions like jealousy. However, his proceeding actions seem to lack awareness and thought for others. Iago manipulates Othello until he too becomes mad and overpowered by envy. Both characters are immersed into their sinister roles because of accessible motives, but they experience fluxes of instability that ultimately dehumanize their characters. At each of these transitions, the motif of bestial and monstrous themes are present to mark the characters’ demise. The most effective way of portraying a character’s greatest fears is to make the audience see it themselves. By doing so, the audience feels conn ected to the character and is subsequently more understanding of his motives. Shakespeare uses bestial imagery early on in the play so that the audience may see what lays in the subconscious of the characters. Iago is plotting against Cassio in Act 2, and he reveals to the audience that his plan will cause Cassio, â€Å"to be as full of quarrel and offense as my young mistress’ dog.† His desire for Cassio to be represented as rowdy animal indicates the power reversal that Iago is scheming about. Analysis Of Sir Gawain And The Green Knight - 1292 Words

Women. Some cannot live with them, some cannot live without them. Women play a key role in everyday living. During the romantic age, they played either the lover or the mistress, like in the two literary passages, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and Marie de France’s Milun. In these two texts women are key players in how the men are presented. One could question whether these women are to be portrayed as social, sexual, or psychological beings, or maybe they even embody all three ideals. How Should Mark A Book - 1464 Words

â€Å"How to Mark a Book† by Mortimer Adler is an essay about how one should mark a book in order to actively engage in the act of reading. The essay describes the benefits of writing in books and how writing in books benefits the reader. Many interesting points are argued in this essay about why one should mark a book; however, some of the points mentioned are not entirely true. Even though marking in a book has proven to help a reader actively engage, that is not always the case. Adler’s essay is directed towards a specific reader, the scholarly reader, and ignores the multitude of reading styles and needs, which is biased. Adler used many metaphors in his essay to describe various points, such as owning a book. According to Adler, until†¦show more content†¦Also, Adler pointed out that it is better to spend time with a book for thousands of hours, rather than magazines for thousands of hours. Adler ended the essay by saying that one should never lend books to their friends because they will be confused and also because one should never share their thoughts on a book with someone else. Adler ignores the reader who may be too poor to afford to buy books and needs to use a public library. The people who go to the public library are not allowed to write in the books that they check out. Adler, does address that if one cannot write in a book, then one should either write on a paper or post-its. Adler does not go into details much about what people should do if they cannot write into book too much, and only states: â€Å"You shouldn’t mark up a book which isn’t yours.† Adler states that if one does now own the book, then they should not mark in the book. Books that are given by outside sources should not be marked on because the outside sources most likely expect one to return the book to them in the same condition that it was given to the reader in. Adler compares writing in a book given from an outside source to Paradise Lost. He writes, â€Å"I’d no more scribble over a first edition of Paradise Lost than I’d give my baby a set of crayons and an original Rembrandt!† (Wake Tech 32). Adler compares writing in a book that does not belong to the reader with an original copy of Paradise Lost

The Black Plague, By Walter Wyman Essay - 1557 Words

There are many ways to explore any period in history. The period that we will look further into will be Medieval Europe. I found an academic article that explores deeper into that period, especially the Black plague. Assembling three primary sources of the black plague, each has a different perspective of what was portrayed in the academic article. Walter Wyman review’s The North American Review which argues where the Black Plague also known as the Bubonic Plague originated from. Wyman brings up that the plague was found in areas in Africa, Asia, and Europe. Additionally he claims the Plague had killed ancient Egyptian Kings and began to spread throughout Athens. Claiming that Athens had lost a whole third of its population. Although, it wasn’t until the sixth century that the Black Plague had been found in Europe. Surgeon General Walter Wyman explains that â€Å"In 542 it spread over Egypt, and passed to Constantinople, where it carried off 10,000 persons in one day, and in the same century appeared in Italy, and extended also along the northern coast of Africa† (Wyman 441). Wyman argues how incredibly fast this disease spread. Not to mention, how truly deadly it was. Furthermore, he adds that one fourth of Europe’s population had died which was around 25,000,000 people. Later bringing up the fact that when this epidemic in Europe happened in the fourteenth century, it sparked the first measures taken to try to stop the spread of this deadly disease. Introduction Summary of the main argument of the article Jabeen (2009) conducted a quantitative and a qualitative children-related study in Pakistan. By using quantitative research methods in the first study she could differentiate between certain groups of children, examine their demographic features and outline their problems. This was done from the â€Å"adult perspective†. We will write a custom essay sample on Working with children and young people in education or any similar topic only for you Order Now The second study was based on qualitative-interpreting methods and constituted a participatory approach which had an added value to the evaluation. While participatory research can be resource- and time intensive it provides an insight into children’s lives which constitutes a necessity in order for society to understand children’s experiences. In addition this kind of research increases the likelihood of being able to protect the wellbeing of children and young people. In Jabeen’s second study the children were involved in the research and determined the terms of their interaction with the researchers. Children participants could maintain their individuality, autonomy and privacy. Such research ensures children’s rights to form opinions and express them in their preferred form and protect them against exploitation through research processes. This is very important since in the Pakistani cultural context there are no national statements or standards for t he ethical conduct of research (Jabeen, 2009) and thus rights-based research involving children is not being guaranteed. Jabeen (2009) suggests that the role of ‘least-adult’ i.e. operating on the children’s level in their social worlds, could be beneficial in such a context in order to engage the trust of children whilst conducting research with them. Jabeen described the children’s participation as enthusiastic because they had â€Å"never been asked before† and had the chance to express their opinions and talk about their personal experiences. Discuss the ethical considerations or implications in working with children/and or young people. Refer to the article selected (about 700 words) Rights-based research with children (but also with adults) makes it necessary to implement an approach that reveals patterns and differences within children’s experiences across times, places and cultures (Beazley et. al, 2009, p.369). The UNCRC points out, that children have the same rights as adults (Beazley et. al, 2009, p.368). These rights include respect, dignity, equality, expression, non-discrimination, life, and civil participation. However as Robson et. al (2009) observe, an international treaty such as the UNCRC can only refer to basic common rights of daily life, which are depending on different cultural values. It is however of importance, that children’s rights are defined by considering the respective cultural context. The authors stress out the significance of four ethical considerations, namely: (i) participation, (ii) acting in the best interests of children, (iii) protecting children from exploitation and (iv) researching young people â€Å"properly† (Robson et. al., 2009, p.468). With respect to the first ethical consideration, the United Nations Convention of the Rights of the Child provides children with the right to have a say in those matters affecting their lives (Robson et. al., 2009, p.467), thus legitimizing children’s participation in research. For the successful implementation of participatory research, it is essential that adult researchers behave respectfully towards children and young people, encourage the trust of children, are flexible with respect to the research design using methods which enable children to express their opinions, views and experiences and provide a transparent research process (Beazley et. al, 2009, p.370). Regarding the acting in the best interests of children it is essential that researchers try to conduct their research as ethically as possible. Robson et. al (2009) indicate that this is not always possible. For example by trying to ensure children’s participation in their research, the authors did not consider collisions between the young people’s school studies and their involvement in research (Robson et. al, 2009, p.471). The third ethical consideration concerns the protection of a possible exploitation of children. While the UNCRC states in Article 19 the right of children to be protected from exploitation which is being specified in article 32, a definition of the term â€Å"exploitation† is missing. This is somehow problematic since the limits of ethical research have to be decided in this case by the individual researcher (Robson et. al., 2009, p.472). The last ethical consideration concerns the children?s right to be researched properly i.e. researching the lives of children is expected to maintain reasonable academic standards. This raises the question of who is eligible to research children properly. Jabeen (2009) suggests that a combination of different methods of data collection can increase the reliability of research and could be a proper way of pursuing children-based research. An answer as if to whether the â€Å"adult perspective† or the â€Å"children perspective† is the only proper way to research children cannot be easily given. It seems that ethical practice which often involves the balancing of different demands is not easy in practice (Robson et. al., 2009, p.467). Successful rights-based research depends more on the political and ethical commitments of the researchers (Robson et. al., 2009, p.477). However doing research â€Å"right† and â€Å"properly† means above all trying to maintain high ethical standards to protect children and young people from exploitation and respecting their rights, opinions and views. Accounting Analysis Michael Hill Inherent Risk Accounts Impacted Control Measures Market Risk- Foreign Exchange Foreign Exchange risk is considered to be arising from the future commercial transactions and the recognition of the assets and liabilities which are denominated in the currency which is not the functional currency. The group is designed to be having significant risk in buying foreign exchange contracts of different foreign currencies in the future at the pre-determined exchange rate (Terlizzi, Meirelles and de Moraes 2016). -Cash and cash equivalents -Trade receivables -Forward exchange contracts The company is designed to use cash flow forecasting sensitivity analysis to tackle this problem. Liquidity risk- The significant exposures pertaining to liquidity risk is considered with borrowings and other liabilities. There is a sufficient problem associated to the risks with the availability of cash and marketable securities. In addition to this, there is significant scope of uncertainty pertaining to adequate amount of credit facilities (Talonpoika et al. 2016). -Current Liabilities -Borrowings The management has ensured that there is sufficient availability for borrowing facilities and committed credit lines. Credit risk- This particular risk is seen to be based on availability of cash and cash equivalents along with trade receivables. There may be significant problem with the credibility of the company is associated to increased debt which may not allow the company to borrow finance from banks or other financial institutions. The group incurs the credit risk from trade receivables (Hayes 2014). -Impaired Trade Receivables -Short-term deposits The management of credit risk is followed by settling the sales to retail customers via cash or major credit cards. Lovisa Holdings Inherent Risk Accounts Impacted Control Measures Credit Risk- The credit risk of the company is associated to financial loss to the group in case a counterparty fails to meet its contractual obligations. This particular risk factor is seen to be recorded with the consolidated statement of financial position which has the carrying amounts of receivables assets. This particular risk is also recognized with cash and cash equivalents along with the derivatives with banks and other financial institutions (Dowdell, Herda and Notbohm 2014). -Short-term deposits The company recognizes the credit risk in terms of considering the carrying amount of the receivable assets along with net provision for doubtful debts. Currency risk- The currency risk of the company is considered with mismatch of currencies forwarded to the borrowings, sales and purchases are denominated in terms of respective functional currencies of the group. The presentation of the currency is primarily denominated in Australian dollar, Singapore dollar, US dollar, British pound and South African Rand. It needs to be discerned that there is a significant scope of mismatch in the currency during exposure to purchases (Feng et al. 2015). -Cash and cash equivalents -Trade Receivables -Trade Payables The company takes significant measures for foreign exchange policies exposure to protect profit margins. This is done by entering into forward exchange contracts along with currency options specifically with the changes related to USD against AUD. Liquidity risk- This risk factor of the company is taken into account with the difficulties in meeting the obligations related to the financial liabilities which are settled by delivering cash or other financial assets (Thi, Mien and Thao 2015). -Trade Payables -Bank Overdrafts -Secured Bank Loans This particular risk is managed by the company by ensuring there is sufficient liquidity to meet the liabilities which are due under stressed and normal situations. Cross-Sectional analysis The depiction of the cross-sectional analysis is included with the ratios such as calculation of operating margin analysis, investment management analysis and assessment of financial leverage. The inclusion of the operating margin analysis is discerned with the ratio calculation such as days sales outstanding, days payable outstanding, days sales in inventory and asset turnover ratio. The investment management consideration is evaluated with the factors such as earnings per share, price earnings ratio, earning yield ratio and dividend yield ratio. The cross-sectional study associated to financial leverage is taken into account with debt to capital ratio, debt to asset ratio, debt to equity ratio and equity ratio (Bonaim, Hankins and Harford 2014). Operating Management Analysis The depictions made as per day sales outstanding clearly shows that over the time Michael Hills has been able to reduce the number of days on an average which a customer takes to pay the invoices. On the other hand, Lovisa is discerned with the fluctuating trend of day sales outstanding which is evident with increasing credit problems in the recent times. As part of the depictions of days payable outstanding for Michael Hills, the company is able to manage its cash flows efficiently to reduce the time taken to pay its bills to the vendors, creditors and suppliers. On the other hand, Lovisa is unable to maintain a short time span for DSP which is mainly due to increasing liabilities with the third-party and suppliers (Fernandes, Lynch and Netemeyer 2014). Michael Hills days sales and inventory demonstrates that the company has taken a considerable amount of time to sell its average inventory and hold the items for a longer period of time during the specified year. On the contrary, Lovisa is depicted with the fluctuating trend of time taken to sell the inventory, however it is clearly in a better position in compared to the former company. The main inference of asset turnover ratio for Michael Hills suggests that the company is in an average position to generate sales by using its assets. Despite of significant improvements over the years in terms of generating higher sales with the assets, Lovisa is clearly in a better position (Karadag 2015). Investment management analysis The earning per share interpretation of Michael Hills clearly suggests that over the year the companys profit allocated to the outstanding share of common stock has reduced and this indicates that it is in her lower profitability situation. Lovisa on the other hand is able to allocate more profit to each outstanding share of common stock. As for the evaluation of price-earnings ratio Michael Hills has depicted fluctuating trend for measure of current share price in relative to earnings per share. However, Lovisa has indicated a linear growth for increasing its current share price against share of earnings. The evaluation of earnings yield has suggested that Michael Hills percentage of each dollar invested in the stock is reducing in terms of stock earned by the company. Lovisa has indicated a constant growth for each dollar invested in the stock earned by the company. Michael Hills dividend ratio has shown considerable amount of returns against the dividends declared by the company d oing the year. Lovisa on the other hand, is depicted with the reducing return for the dividends (De Jong et al. 2014). Financial Leverage Analysis As per the information available for Canadian public debt, the countrys overall debt to GDP stands at 66%. This shows that Michael Hills is able to maintain low debt to capital ratio in compared to general industry average for all the four years. The Austrian government debt clearly suggests that the percentage of government debt to GDP in 2016-2017 was estimated at 18.9%. Lovisa has not been able to demonstrate a strong financial position as the companys debt to capital ratio is significantly high in compared to the industry average (Illmeyer et al. 2017). The interpretations for the debt to asset ratio suggest that both Michael Hills and Lovisa is financed with same percentage of assets in terms of debt. The assessment of debt to equity ratio for Lovisa has suggested that the company uses relatively less shareholders equity and debt to finance the available assets. Michael Hills on the other hand, has a greater leverage for financing the borrowings with the assets however, this is at the cost of a greater financial risk for the company. The interpretations of the equity ratio clearly suggest that both the companies are at the same platform when they are compared in terms of total availability of equity and common shareholders equity (Fazli Sabri and Tze Juen 2014). Times Series Analysis for operating management This data clearly shows that over the time Lovisa is able to increase all the parameters of days sales outstanding, days payable outstanding, days sales in inventory and asset turnover ratio. The significant increase for Lovisa as per the operating management elements are seen to increase in the time period of 2015 and 2016. The recent performance interpretations of Michael Hills have considered significant improvements in the financial aspects. This is clearly depicted with the available results of 2017. Times Series Analysis for operating management This section of the study is able to suggest that Michael Hills is able to demonstrate a significant increase in financial leverage which taken into account with debt to capital ratio, debt to asset ratio, debt to equity ratio and equity ratio. The significant increase of year for Michael Hills is considered with 2015, however Lovisa has shown tremendous growth potential in 2017. Prospective Analysis The interpretations of prospective analysis are based on forecasting of sales growth rate, NOPAT margin, WC to sales, LT assets to sales, Debt ratio, after-tax cost of debt, dividend rate. As per the prospective analysis of the company the beginning book value is significantly lesser than the value beyond forecast period. However, it needs to be noted that the companies value beyond the forecast horizon is significantly high which also highlights the risk factor is related to the project. In addition to this, there is a significant scope of improvement for value per share (Castrogiovanni et al. 2016). The prospective analysis of the study is a to depict on alternative approaches to avoid the inclusion of nontraded funds. The valuation summary is able to suggest on models which might be used by nontraded firms for the purpose of assessment of overall value creation. Based on the interpretations of valuation summary the overall performance of the company is considered to be average in nature. As for the depiction of financial report there has been no instance of abnormal loss faced by Michael Hills. In addition to this, the different aspects of prospective analysis in terms of assessing net profit after tax it is clearly discerned that the overall NPAT of the company has shown considerable amount of improvement over four years. Despite of the increasing net profit after tax, the groups working capital ratio of 3:1 is able to demonstrate an average financial position of the company (Baos-Caballero, Garca-Teruel and Martnez-Solano 2014). Recommendation The accounting analysis of Michael Hills identification of 3 potential red flags of the company and identify 3 key accounts in their balance sheet/income statement has shown the inherent risks of the company in terms of Market Risk as per Foreign Exchange risk are considered with Market Risk related to Foreign Exchange risk which depicts that the Foreign Exchange risk is considered to be arising from the future commercial transactions and the recognition of the assets and liabilities which are denominated in the currency which is not the functional currency. The impact on the respective accounts are considered with Cash and cash equivalents, Trade receivables and Forward exchange contracts. The company is designed to use cash flow forecasting sensitivity analysis to tackle this problem. The significant exposures pertaining to liquidity risk is considered with borrowings and other liabilities. There is a sufficient problem associated to the risks with the availability of cash and mark etable securities. In addition to this, there is significant scope of uncertainty pertaining to adequate amount of credit facilities. That accounts impacted includes Cash and cash equivalents, Trade receivables and Forward exchange contracts. Michael Hill is designed to use cash flow forecasting sensitivity analysis to tackle this problem. The credit risk is considered with problem with the credibility of the company is associated to increased debt which may not allow the company to borrow finance from banks or other financial institutions. The group incurs the credit risk from trade receivables. Investment management analysis clearly depicts that over of years profit allocated to the outstanding share of common stock has reduced and this indicates that it is in her lower profitability situation. The interpretations for the debt to asset ratio suggest that both Michael Hills and Lovisa is financed with same percentage of assets in terms of debt. The assessment of debt to equity rati o for Lovisa has suggested that the company uses relatively less shareholders equity and debt to finance the available assets. Conclusion The discourse of teh study has shown Michael Hills is one of the market leaders, when it comes to the explicit jewelleries along with exclusive diamond collection that adds a lot to the fashion sense of the wearer. Being one of the market leaders, Michael fashion has many competitors, however, among them; Lovisa Holding Limited can be acknowledged as the main competitor of the selected organisation. Michael Hills is considered one of the famous multi-speciality fashion and jewellery brands that have been operating in various countries since 1979. By the end of 1987, the brand opened more than 10 stores in various countries around the world. However, as per the finacial position Lovisa Holding Limited is in a better position.
